* Powerful code editor with rich functionality such as IntelliSense that makes writing code and HTML faster

* Quickly create data-driven Web applications using the built-in data controls and integrated access to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express

* Support for multiple languages, including Visual Basic, C#, and J#

* Get started using the built-in, fully functional starter kits like the Personal Web Starter Kit

Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition and ASP.NET 2.0 Beta 2 are now available! It is now simple to build and deploy sites using the latest technology - read the Go-live license and take your applications into production today.

(1) MSDN Developer Centers

MSDN Developer Centers pull together content and resources around specific products and technologies. They connect you to code samples, community sites, technical articles and documentation, upcoming events, and much more. Each Developer Center gives you a clear road map to understanding and working with your technology of choice.

(2) Move beyond the web to mobile phones, instant messaging, and more...

ColdFusion MX 7 introduces event gateways, a powerful new feature that allows ColdFusion applications to interact with more than just web browsers and web services. Using the same, easy-to-use CFML for creating web applications today, developers can now build gateway applications that interact with a host of other protocols that are common in today's networked world. Developers can create their own gateways or build applications using the several prebuilt gateways available in the product.

Short Message Service

Included in ColdFusion MX 7 is a Short Message Service (SMS) application gateway. SMS is a way to send short text messages to and from wireless devices, such as mobile phones, PDAs, and pagers. The Associated Press reported in September 2004 that the world will have almost two billion mobile telephone users by 2006. In China alone, the number of new subscribers is rising by four to five million each month.

While SMS applications can be built today with complex Java on highly customized servers, event gateways allow developers to leverage the productivity of ColdFusion so they can bring applications to this vast new market with unparalleled ease.

ColdFusion SMS applications let end users use cell phones to interact with applications such as the following:

* SMS banking, where customers receive alerts, perform account transfers, pay bills, and more
* Notification of events such as package shipments or restaurant table availability
* Voting, such as popularity voting for reality television shows
* Remote interaction with traditional web applications, such as approving a purchase order when out of the office

Always Keep Learning

By Alejandro Herryman

Becoming satisfied with your skills and present business position is one of the worst things you can do. If you want your business to grow, you must always keep learning. Always think ahead and be on the lookout for new marketing skills and ideas. Try a new way to market your product or service each month. It doesn't need to be some amazing new technique - just something you've never tried before. You should be advertising with several different methods every day. This advertising should include a few old and proven resources, as well as at least one new method. Never think you don't need to advertise. If you stop advertising, your business will stop growing. Evaluate your advertising efforts and your business every few months. Where are you compared to where you were when you first started or where you were a few months ago? If you're not where you want to be, don't become discouraged! Just learn a new way to promote your business, make some small changes, and then reevaluate. If you are reading this article -you have what it takes to be successful! You are demonstrating that you understand how important it is to keep learning. CONGRATULATIONS!

Leather Mini iPod Case from Roots-Direct

Mother's Day Gift Guide from ROOTS Direct

At the source of most great success stories is a special woman. Such is the case with Emily. She's truly one of a kind. To know her is to appreciate a rare mix of vitality, culture and style wrapped up in one person.

Emily has not only inspired a highly successful leather handbag, she's become a personality in her own right. She's become the object of much curiosity and intrigue.

Born in Jamaica, Emily moved to Canada at a young age. Her family's background spans the globe, with ancestors from Africa, Asia, India, Spain, Great Britain and the Caribbean (one branch of relatives goes back to the Arawak Indians). Such worldly roots help explain Emily's soulful, multi-cultural beauty. She takes pride in her family's heritage but she loves traveling to other countries to discover new cultures.

Emily studied in Toronto where she also pursued her passion for music and dance. In high school, she was a track star. Since then, she's stayed in shape through yoga, sports, hiking outdoors and healthy eating.

Emily is natural, genuine and modern. She's up to date and down to earth. When it comes to music, her tastes go from Bob Marley to John Legend to Alicia Keys and U2. She's deeply concerned about the environment and makes time to help those less fortunate than her.

To some people, Emily is a bit of an enigma. With such an original background and impressive qualities, Emily stands out in a crowd. It's little surprise she's been a muse for various artists. She's certainly an inspiration for Roots.

Emily and Roots. They go together perfectly. Made for each other. A natural fit....

The war of art
KEVIN NANCE

The tension has been building for months. The saber-rattling is deafening. The generals are in position, surveying their troops and staring each other down. There are threats and counterthreats, trash talk, cries of dirty pool -- all preparatory to the big rumble.

No, this isn't a military campaign or some pro wrestling smackdown. Welcome, instead, to what might be called the Chicago Art Fair War. In this long-simmering struggle, culminating this weekend, a grizzled veteran, Art Chicago -- once one of the international art market's leading fairs but in recent years embattled and vulnerable -- is being challenged by two competing fairs: Chicago Contemporary & Classic, which has usurped Art Chicago's old home at Navy Pier, and the Nova Young Art Fair, a West Loop upstart focusing on emerging artists.

Petal artwork wins Beck's award
by bbc news

The Oxford-born artist's work, Version 2: Part 1, was praised by judges for being "subtle, poetic and complex".

Her installation is a wooden frame holding two projectors to display video and slide shows of flower petals.

Mackie beat five other artists - Donald Urquhart, Luke Fowler, Ryan Gander, Lali Chetwynd and Daria Martin. Judge and former Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans said her work possessed a "resistance to snap reading" and became richer with each viewing.

Mackie spent her childhood in Canada but moved to London to study at St Martins School of Art and has held a number of solo shows since 2000. The other shortlisted artists also received a share of the £40,000 prize fund.

Street Art Goes Global, Online

Rachel Metz

Not everybody can stroll the streets of Melbourne, Baghdad or Vilnius, Lithuania, looking for street art, but one website lets everybody do so virtually, by bringing international images of spray paintings, stickers, stencils and more to the masses.

Known as the Wooster Collective, the New York City-based site houses an array of graffiti and street art from around the world. Artists and camera-happy passersby send in photos of their works and sightings, and site creators put them up in blog-style postings that ensure the pictures take center stage.

The Wooster Collective is the brainchild of New York City's Marc Schiller and his wife, Sara. When the two moved to Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood in 2001, they started noticing graffiti and street art while walking their dog around the area, Schiller said.

"A few years back, we were blown away that there isn't a block in the area we live, SoHo, the Lower East Side, the East Village, (that) if you look closely isn't exploding with original art that artists are placing on the streets," he said.

In May 2001 they began the site, which documented what they saw and shared it with others. It grew from there, he said. The site, which is updated constantly, now includes many things besides photos of street art and graffiti. There are events, books, podcasts, cell-phone content and pictures and information on street art from around the world.

It's currently garnering about 45,000 to 75,000 visits per day, Schiller said, and its popularity has grown entirely by word of mouth.

Reliable Disappointment: Megan Foster and OUT:Tom Kotik
2005-04-29 until 2005-06-06
Black and White Gallery
Brooklyn, NY, USA United States of America

Brooklyn, NY. Black & White Gallery is proud to present RELIABLE DISAPPOINTMENT (recent paintings) - the second solo exhibition by the New York based artist Megan Foster and OUT (maximum volume) - a site-specific sound installation by a New York based artist Tom Kotik. Megan Foster, in her new body of work, continues to explore the theme of hollow “housescapes”, trying to elicit subtle yet uneasy feelings from the spectator. Tom Kotik continues to explore the dynamics of power and repression, expressed through music, architecture and minimal forms. OUT (maximum volume) - an interactive sculptural installation is a soundproofed minimalist box. By opening the lid of box, a loud torrent of musical sound is unleashed into the gallery space.

Focusing on the American suburban experience, Megan Foster omits the figure from the canvas, leaving vacant interiors to stand out as a sign of something hidden. By depicting parts of households that are familiar to us such as the empty couch, the messy bathroom or the wrecked kitchen one can not help but ask what lies beneath these sunken scenes.

The viewer is forced to fill in the blanks and answer the question: “What exactly is going on here?” Through the paintings the artist makes a journey into the troubled heart of American suburbia via a mix of architecture and design, sterile mediated images and domestically constructed televisual scenes.

The work of Megan Foster raises key contemporary issues such as displacement, abandonment, suburban sprawl. The canvas becomes an arena for hidden lives and secret unacknowledged longings.

Megan Foster is a recent graduate of Columbia University with an MFA degree and a BFA degree from Rhode Island School of Design. She is a recipient of many distinguished awards, including LeRoy Neiman fellowship from LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies, Columbia University, G.W. Hodge Ritchie Award for Excellence in Printmaking Division of Fine Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, John A. Chironna Endowment Fund Division of Fine Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Robert Gore Rifkind Scholarship sponsored by the Pont-Aven School of Art, Los Angeles, California. In 2004 her work was included in the Liverpool Biennial – Independent section and “Domestic Odyssey” at the San Jose Museum of Art.

In OUT (maximum volume), Tom Kotik continues his dialogue with music to emphasize a sense of unleashed repression - the psychological - and its intangibility, something he experiences while playing in his rock and roll band. "We all contain sides of ourselves that long to be revealed, but usually choose the safest appearance. My work explores these tensions between image and desire", Kotik writes in his statement. His work purposefully avoids narrative; it is a powerful combination of absence and highly structured presence.

Tom Kotik is a graduate of Hunter College with a MFA degree in Sculpture (2004) and NYU with a BS degree (1993). Most recently, Tom has exhibited at Miami Museum of Science, Sculpture Center and Socrates Sculpture Park in LIC, NY. Tom is currently a resident at the LMCC studio program, NYC and plays music with his "Mighty High" band.

mondomedeusah Japan Music Review by Nik Weston

Konichiwa kiddies….

Well …..by the time you get to see this page ill be back from my latest expedition to the land of the rising sun having been over to DJ & promote a new Japan only CD compilation called ‘Nu Style’ for the Nuro label. www.nuro.jp that actually isn't out till June ! It’s packed with exclusive tracks or edits never released before all from european artists. Can’t reveal too much as the track listing hasn’t yet been finalized but no doubt they’ll be more news soon in the next edition of the Nippon Nik column. Japan is hotting up with the south of the Island basking in 70 degrees temperature but it seems that the earthquakes are getting more and more common now which gives something for the locals to concern themselves with…. Music wise lots is happening…..

Hajime Yoshizawa the keys man with Kyoto Jazz Massive & Sleepwalker spent two weeks in April/May locked up in a London studio making tracks for a soul type project he’s recording for the Pioneer Label .Infamous characters seen coming out of his studio (actually the studio is actually below my office so it wasn’t exactly celebrity snooping ! ) sighted included Vanessa Freeman ,Chris Franck & Nina Miranda (Da Lata etc), Jason Yarde , Nathan Haines & Face. Ryota Nozaki & his vocalist Aya were also in London recording tracks for not one future album but two (!) on Tokuma. His current long player release for Pantone ‘Samurai’ has had some great reviews Ryota tells me he’s got 60 demos he’s working on at the moment. Blimey said I ! Recently married Aya has an album (that Ryota has a helping hand with)due at some point this year for the Gate label. Pantone also plan to release albums from Japanese artists Jafrosax & Yukihiro Fukutomi in the summer and a Jazztronik single with a S.U.M.O mix is out now along with a Fukutomi single Equality featuring the dolcet tones of Rich Medina in original & Blackbeard mixes with another track ‘Road to Nowhere’ on the flipside.
www.pantonemusic.com

On the mighty Especial Distribution label licensed via Oakum Jazz gets remixed by Louie Vega for his ‘Madrugada’ track. Two remixes and two originals on the 12’’. This should be in those shops (you know the ones! ) by early June. If you have any trouble locating a copy of this (or any other Japanese 12’’ release for that matter ) then email skip@therecordroom.co.uk and see what he finds.

Speaking of Especial, Vanessa Freeman tells me that she will go to Japan in the summer to sing again for a repeat performance of the PLAY KJM party that rocked 2,000 people at YEBISU Garden Place last December. You might have read the piece that Bembe & Vanessa wrote about the gigs in Japan in the last issue of Straight No Chaser Magazine . Jazzysport have been busy and there’s a flurry of 12’s due as I write. Apar from 2 Sa Ra 12’s with instrumentals there’s a couple of DJ Mitsu the beats 12’s –one featuring Roddy Rod & Kev Brown, one 12’’ on PPP 12’’ on P Vine and an album I think through Ki/oon (sub label of Sony )by Breakthrough –an outfit comprised of DSK Invisible,DJ Jin & Masaya Fantasista. The album is chokka bloc full of surprise guests including Bembe Segue,Count Bass D,Bahamadia,Maspyke,DJ Mitsu The Beats,Grap Luva,Mark De Clive Lowe,Jneiro Jarel,Amp Fiddler,Khemet & Pushim. Masaya will be djing at Onward International at Ruby Lo with Tokyo’s Jazzy Sport Stax Groove Dancers on 30th June with a big event in London Cargo on 3rd July. More gigs are planned in Amsterdam etc so maybe check the jazzysport website for more info or email me and I’ll share what I know. One time K Creative & Galliano member and session musician supreme Ski Oakenfull released an album on Pony Cannon in March which is well worth checking out.www.skioakenfull.com. He tells me that at the moment the album is CD only ..Japan only at the moment but he’s talking with a uk label (I thought it could be Dome in the uk perhaps but Peter at Dome claims he’s not heard the album yet… )Its got Amp Fiddler on fine form on several tracks and also Earl Zinger & Valerie Etienne . Personally I think it’s really strong. There’s a big buzz on The Soil & Pimp Horns at the moment .A few lucky people managed to get hold of the first 12’’ and there’s been a flurry of activity lately as UK national Radio Gilles Peterson has just discovered them. Gilles called me with ‘so….er…what do you know about Soil & Pimp then ?’ as he’d never come across them..I gave him the second 12’’ from the band called ‘Pimpmaster’ and he’s been caining it ever since. He loves them describing them as a cross between the Lounge Lizards and Sleepwalker. Some of you may have come across the Izanami 7’’ that featured them on the flipside and well worth searching out.www.therecordroom.co.uk. I haven’t heard Gilles enthusing about a Jazz outfit like this for years and certainly there’s possibly a new Jazz (or Jazz influenced ) movement that seems to be happening not just in Japan with Sleepwalker, Soil & Pimp, Jazztronik, Izanami, Dazai Yuri,Ino Hidefumi & Sunaga T but all over the world…..For all our sakes lets hope so.

Another little 45 which caused quite a little stir which has been and gone is by a new artist from Fukuoka called Ino Hidefumi. He recently released a 45 with ‘Never can Say Goodbye’ flipped by Michael Jackson’s ‘Billy Jean’ but before you pass this by…don’t sleep.Trust me ! Reggae drums kick off for dirty little rhodes instrumentals that really really work. Not exactly peak time fodder but you watch the headz when you drop this baby. Kinda in a Madlib style but in tune ! The label informs me there’s a new 45 from Ino Hidefumi dropping soon. Lastly just received is a funky little 45 from Scoobie Doo with a drum heavy funk version of ‘Tighten Up’. It’s actually really good if you just get through the Japanese vocals and myself & Jazzman Gerald agreed it passed the test (even if it was ‘ just’ ! )It’s taken from the ‘Plus One More’ and the only way I can describe the album is think New Mastersounds +Japanese pop meets Japanese vocals. www.jvcmusic.co.jp/speedstar/
